Clyve has been part of the Tauranga Half story from the very beginning, even before racing himself. He was there watching friends compete and saw the event take shape through the efforts of early champions like Peter Kirk, Troy Griffin, and then Mount Maunganui mayor Wayne Moultrie. What started as a bold idea grew into one of New Zealand’s most iconic endurance events.
After 30 races, Clyve’s motivation comes from the people as much as the challenge. From familiar faces returning each year to his training group, The Wolf Pac, he credits the friendships and support around him for keeping him moving. “It’s all about the mates who help carry you around the course,” he says.
Race day still brings the same excitement; the buzz of race morning, the focus on the start line, and the satisfaction of crossing the finish knowing the work has paid off. These days, Clyve says it’s less about chasing times and more about enjoying each discipline and appreciating the chance to do what he loves, although some highlights include lining up alongside elite names such as Cameron Brown, Tony O’Hagan, and Jo Lawn in the early days.
